Novo Nordisk manufactures Wegovy which contains semaglutide as the active ingredient. It is used with a reduced calorie diet and an increase in physical activity for chronic weight management in:
- Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2, or 27 kg/m2 with at least one body weight-related condition, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), or type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Patients aged 12 years and over with a BMI at the 95th percentile or more for that age and sex
Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist (glucagon-like peptide-1). It works by reducing appetite and calorie intake. This leads to weight loss and helps with weight management.
